研究テーマ
- 日本の若者の西洋音楽ビデオの使用と鑑賞法
What kinds of Western music are Japanese young people accessing, listening to, and watching on music video? How do they interpret and use what they see and hear? - The role of the first language when reading in a second or foreign language
My research shows that Japanese students often think in Japanese when they read in English. There are a number of different but related reasons for this. I am looking at findings in neuroscience that could explain why they do this and possible implications for teaching. - Using recent findings in psychology and neuroscience to understand how the brain learns and to find effective ways to teach English.

プロフィール
I always wanted to see the world and so I studied foreign languages then taught English in many places (France, Holland, Portugal, China, and Brazil.) I came to Japan in 1988 and loved it from the first day. I enjoy all kinds of art forms and entertainment. I read a lot, watch movies, and listen to music. I also love the outdoors and exploring the mountain trails in and around Kyoto as well as the Japan Alps. There is a lot more of the world I still want to see and I take every chance to travel that I can.
学生へのメッセージ
You will get out of life only as much as you are willing to put in. Be courageous, set yourself goals, take risks, and stretch yourself. This applies not only to your life goals, but also to your English language goals. Think ahead to how you want to use English in the future, set yourself a target level that you want to reach, plan how you will reach your goal in the 4 years you have at Kyoto Sangyo University. Think seriously about joining our ECC program, studying overseas, or joining an internship program. And use every opportunity you can to use English on and off the campus.
